Parent Initiative began in 1993 after Second Mile staff and other community members recognized a need for increased parent involvement in our Title I schools in Huntsville, Alabama. With a goal to build relationships and community through the empowerment of parents, the Parent Initiative Program provides educational training, support and volunteer opportunities for parents in the schools. We began in Terry Heights Elementary, and then expanded to 12 Title I elementary schools.  In 2016, Parent Initiative expanded its role serving the Huntsville City Schools by providing Parent Parties Educational Curriculum to 12 area schools.  These schools include:  Ridgecrest, Sonnie Hereford, McDonnell, Dawson, Lakewood, Highlands, Montview, Rolling HIlls, Chapman, Morris and Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary Schools.  Parent Initiative also supports the Second Mile Preschool with parent education curriculum through Parent Parties.   We continue to support, consult and work in the schools and partner with Huntsville City Schools to meet the parent involvement requirements.

Second Mile Parent Initiative presently serves in 15 schools in Huntsville, Alabama, and their Parent PartiesĀ® Program is currently in schools in 49 states.
