Began in 1987 in an 800 sq. foot building on Clinton Avenue. Neighborhood Thrift Store was designed to build hope by giving parents hope and opportunity to provide for their families in exchange for their time being volunteered working alongside our employees. This volunteer program is called Earn While You Learn, as the parents are earning for their families while learning how to work with program guidelines. Volunteer hours are Monday - Friday from 9am - 3pm.
We now are a 10,000 sq. foot thrift store filled with clothes, furniture, linens, household goods, shoes, books, electronics, and toys. The Neighborhood Thrift Store also believes in recycling as much as possible. We are blessed to send items that aren't quite sellable overseas to Africa and South America including clothes, linens, toys, shoes, hats, purses, and belts. We locally recycle computers, jewelry, metal, plastics, cardboard, and glass.
Through the Neighborhood Store, we run Pride for Parents including Kid Kits and our Christmas Program. Kid Kits is a program where we fundraise all year, and buy new school supplies for over 1,000 local children. Each Kid Kit costs the Neighborhood Store approximately $35.00, and we sell each kit to a parent for $8.00 - $12.00. It is an exciting time to see children so excited about "their very own new bookbags" and seeing their parents providing them. Our Christmas program is run the same way, with fundraising & purchasing new Christmas toys, with parents buying them at 1/2 - 1/3 of the cost. These programs are based on dignity not dependency.
A fundraiser for the Christmas program is an annual benefit fashion show. They are hosted now at our Second Mile Preschool in the fall. Our models are store employees or volunteers, wearing beautiful attire that has been donated to the Neighborhood Thrift Store. This is a great time for people to hear the store of the Neighborhood Store, see our fashions, fellowship, and to financially support buying our Christmas toys.
The Neighborhood Thrift Store also partners with Women's Economic Development Council. We have a clothing closet designated for the WEDC graduates. Comcast continues to show our Cooking Shows and commercials on their information channel #3.
